THE WARRENS

The tunnel had been built with magic—that much was obvious. The three of us were able to walk abreast, with Addam’s and my cantrips bouncing ahead to light the way. The walls were smooth and seamless, and lacked any sort of tool or engine marks.

It was also cold. Brand’s swears hung in front of him as frosted mist. The latest swear was directed at me, because he didn’t think I was being observant enough.

“I’m always more observant than you think I am,” I complained.

“Since when?” Brand shot back. “Since you packed a ferret in your overnight bag?”

“I should never have told you that,” I said. “And crap, I forgot to mention to Zurah that I stole one of her pets.” Brand’s mouth opened, so I pointed at it. “If you mention the goldfish, I will lose my shit.”

“Goldfish?” Addam asked me.

“Brand doesn’t think I know how to care for pets,” I said. “And I was fucking five years old.”

“You suffocated it. You literally drowned a fish,” Brand said. I stepped on something. With a flick of my finger, my light cantrip spun back to me and illuminated a sparkly red hair band. It was the sort of thing members of the Revelry wore.

“Lots of footsteps in the dust. Even on the edge,” Brand said. “Large parties of people headed this way, and I don’t see that many footprints leading back.”

Our conversation subsided, and we continued to walk. Occasionally the sloping trail switchbacked, but only downwards, never up.

“That was a nice use of Telekinesis back in the trailer park,” I told Addam. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you lift something that large.”

“Large is easy,” Addam said. “Precision is more difficult. But when you’re holding a baby in the air with your mind, you learn.”

“Quinn? You used to move Quinn around with your mind?” Brand asked. “Is this a fucked-up scion thing?”

I’d sent my light back down the tunnel, but I could hear the smile in Addam’s voice. He said, “Quinn was a very fussy baby. He slept poorly. But he loved being rocked in the air. It always put him to sleep. That’s when I started storing Telekinesis spells as a matter of routine.”

“You are so fucking soft, Saint Nicholas,” Brand said.

I kicked Brand in the shin—or at least aimed a general kick where his shin should have been. He must have felt the whiff of air, because I sensed his grumble along our bond.

“We’ll find him,” Brand finally said. “You know that, right? And it’s not like Quinn is defenseless. He and Max are tougher than we give them credit for.”

Addam went quiet for a few moments, too long to be thinking of a response.

But after a minute had passed, he spoke again. “Quinn has so little life experience. I . . . it was . . . It was always hard for me to see him socialize with others. I remember this one time I thought it would be fine for Quinn, who was six years old, to have play dates with other children.
